Job Overview
This role is central to CIMMYT Zimbabwe’s initiative to transform agricultural waste into sustainable resources. The Agricultural Waste Management Specialist will design and implement strategies to manage crop residues, livestock byproducts, and other agricultural waste materials. The position requires collaboration with local farmers, government agencies, and NGOs to promote eco-friendly practices that enhance soil fertility, reduce pollution, and support circular economy principles. Candidates will contribute to Zimbabwe’s agricultural sustainability goals while gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic field environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute agricultural waste management plans tailored to smallholder farming systems.
- Conduct field assessments to identify waste sources, quantify volumes, and evaluate environmental risks.
- Design composting, biogas, and mulching solutions to convert waste into value-added products.
- Train farmers and stakeholders on sustainable waste management techniques and safety protocols.
- Monitor and report on the environmental and economic impact of implemented projects.
- Collaborate with research teams to integrate waste management into broader agricultural development programs.
Required Skills
- Expertise in agricultural waste characterization and lifecycle analysis.
- Proficiency in designing composting systems, biogas technologies, and soil amendment strategies.
- Strong project management and stakeholder coordination abilities.
- Knowledge of Zimbabwean agricultural policies and environmental regulations.
- Excellent data collection, analysis, and reporting skills using tools like Excel or GIS.
- Fluency in Shona or Ndebele is a plus.
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Agricultural Engineering, or related discipline.
- Postgraduate qualification in Sustainable Agriculture or Waste Management preferred.
Experience
- 3-5 years of experience in agricultural waste management or environmental consulting.
- Proven track record in implementing field-based projects in rural Zimbabwe.
Salary
150,000 – 250,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and performance.
