Job Overview

The Freight Operations Manager will lead the day‑to‑day freight handling activities at the Chiredzi hub, ensuring seamless coordination of inbound and outbound shipments, compliance with customs regulations, and adherence to DHL’s high service standards. This role is pivotal in optimizing transport routes, managing carrier relationships, and driving operational efficiency across air, sea, and road freight modes. The successful candidate will work closely with the regional Operations Director, sales teams, and external partners to deliver cost‑effective solutions that meet the evolving needs of customers in the agriculture, mining, and manufacturing sectors. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all freight operations at the Chiredzi hub, including cargo acceptance, consolidation, documentation, and dispatch.
  • Develop and implement efficient routing plans to minimize transit time and cost while maintaining service quality.
  • Manage relationships with airlines, ocean carriers, trucking firms, and customs brokers to secure competitive rates and reliable capacity.
  • Ensure compliance with Zimbabwean customs regulations, safety standards, and DHL’s internal SOPs.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on‑time delivery, freight cost per unit, and cargo damage rates, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead a team of freight coordinators, warehouse staff, and drivers, providing coaching, performance feedback, and career development support.
  • Collaborate with sales and customer service teams to translate client requirements into operational plans.
  • Prepare regular operational reports for senior management, highlighting trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Implement sustainability practices, including load optimization and carbon‑footprint reduction initiatives.
  • Act as the primary point of contact during freight disruptions, coordinating contingency actions and communication with stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of multimodal freight operations, customs procedures, and international trade regulations.
  • Proven ability to negotiate contracts and rates with carriers and service providers.
  • Excellent analytical skills with proficiency in logistics software and ERP systems.
  • Leadership experience managing cross‑functional teams in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Problem‑solving mindset with a focus on operational excellence.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Shona or Ndebele is an advantage.

Education

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related discipline. Professional certifications such as Certified International Freight Forwarder (CIFF) or Lean Six Sigma are advantageous but not mandatory.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of progressive experience in freight operations, preferably within a global logistics company. Experience managing a team and handling high‑volume cargo in an emerging market is highly valued.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 250,000 to SSP 400,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
