Job Overview

The Lead Data Engineer will design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines that enable advanced analytics and AI initiatives across IBM Zimbabwe’s client portfolio. Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement end‑to‑end data pipelines using technologies such as Apache Spark, Kafka, and AWS/GCP services.
  • Optimize data storage solutions, including data lakes and warehouses, to ensure high availability and performance.
  • Collaborate with data scientists to provision clean, curated datasets for machine learning models.
  • Establish data governance standards, security protocols, and compliance with local regulations.
  • Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and promote best practices in data engineering.
  • Monitor pipeline health, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve system reliability.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Scala, or Java.
  • Extensive experience with big data frameworks (Spark, Hadoop, Flink).
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Expertise in SQL and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, Cassandra, and MongoDB.
  • Understanding of data modeling, ETL design patterns, and streaming architectures.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and effective communication with cross‑functional teams.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Advanced certifications in cloud data services (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics, Google Professional Data Engineer) are highly desirable.
