Job Title

Laboratory Technician – GIS & Remote Sensing (1 Post)
Department: Geography, Environmental Sustainability and Resilience Building
Location: Gweru
Job Type: Full-Time


Job Purpose

The Laboratory Technician will provide IT support, network administration, and technical maintenance within the GIS and Remote Sensing laboratory. The role focuses on ensuring efficient operation of computer systems, GIS software, cloud infrastructure, and network systems, supporting both students and academic staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the first point of contact for IT support in the GIS laboratory
  • Install, configure, and maintain computer hardware, software, and operating systems
  • Manage GIS software systems such as ArcGIS Pro and cloud computing platforms
  • Install and maintain servers, server operating systems, and network infrastructure
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues
  • Configure and maintain routers, switches, and network devices
  • Ensure cybersecurity through antivirus and firewall installations and updates
  • Monitor and optimize network performance and system functionality
  • Provide technical support to students and faculty members
  • Maintain IT documentation, system records, and asset inventories
  • Test and evaluate new hardware and software before deployment
  • Support procurement of IT equipment and accessories

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of IT support, networking, and system administration
  • Experience with GIS software, remote sensing tools, and cloud computing
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues efficiently and independently
  • Understanding of cybersecurity practices and network protection
  • Good communication and user support skills in academic environments
  • Strong organizational and technical documentation abilities

Qualifications & Experience

  • BSc Honours Degree in:
    • Information Technology
    • Computer Science
    • Or a related field
  • Additional qualifications such as:
    • National Diploma / Higher National Diploma in IT (advantage)
  • Relevant work experience in IT support, GIS labs, or network administration is an added advantage

Special Requirements

  • Candidates with international qualifications must provide certification from the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE)
