Job Overview

As an Urban Heat Island Mitigation Specialist, you will lead initiatives to reduce urban heat effects in Zimbabwean cities. This role combines environmental science, urban design, and community engagement to develop strategies that lower temperatures, improve air quality, and enhance public health. The position is based in Gweru, a key urban center in Zimbabwe’s Midlands province.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct heat mapping and climate vulnerability assessments for urban areas
  • Design green infrastructure solutions like urban forests, cool roofs, and permeable pavements
  • Collaborate with municipal planners to integrate heat mitigation into zoning policies
  • Develop community education programs on climate adaptation strategies
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of heat reduction interventions

Required Skills

  • Expertise in GIS mapping and climate modeling software
  • Knowledge of sustainable urban design principles
  • Strong analytical skills for environmental data interpretation
  • Excellent communication for stakeholder engagement
  • Fluency in both English and local languages preferred

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field
  • Master’s Degree in Climate Science or Sustainable Development highly advantageous

Experience

  • 3-5 years in urban sustainability projects or environmental consulting
  • Proven experience with heat island mitigation strategies
  • Project management experience in government or NGO settings

Salary

2000 – 3000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
